Running on Fumes? Start With the Basics Before You Try Anything Fancy
It's 3pm. You've had two coffees, answered forty messages for other people, and the one task that's just for you has slid to tomorrow again. You tell yourself you'll sleep, eat, and move once everyone else is taken care of. That day hasn't arrived yet.
Part of what's going on is your brain chemistry. Dopamine is the chemical behind wanting. It fuels motivation, focus, and curiosity, and it's a big part of why you feel like starting things at all. When you're depleted, getting started gets harder, and "just push through" stops working.
You have more influence over this than you might think. Start with the basics.
Sleep comes first
A rough night can drop your dopamine more than you'd expect. Before you try a new supplement, planner, or morning routine, look at your sleep. Everything else gets harder when it's off.
If "get more sleep" sounds like a joke when you're the one everyone calls at 10pm, I get it. Start smaller than feels worthy. Maybe that's one night a week where your phone stays in another room, or one night where you stop answering messages by a set time. Small counts.
Move your body, if you can
Exercise daily if you can. That doesn't have to mean a gym membership or a 5am run. A walk around the block counts, and so does stretching in your kitchen while the coffee brews.
The "if you can" matters. Some days a ten-minute walk is a win, and I want you to count it as one.
Feed the machine
Some foods give your brain the raw materials it uses to make dopamine. Foods with tyrosine, like eggs, cheese, meat, fish, soy, nuts, seeds, beans, and lentils, support it. Magnesium-rich foods like seeds, nuts, beans, and whole grains help too.
It also helps to go easy on processed food, high-fat food, sugar, and caffeine. That doesn't mean a perfect diet. It means noticing whether lunch was a handful of crackers eaten over the sink, and giving yourself a little more than that.
Bring the stress down
You can't avoid stress, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. But you can give your body a way to come down from it. Meditation, visualization, and breathing exercises all help, and the breathing is the easiest to start because you can do it anywhere, including the parking lot before you walk into the next thing.
A word about supplements
Some people look into supplements like L-tyrosine and L-theanine. If that's you, please run any supplement past your doctor first. What's safe depends on your health and anything else you take, and that isn't something to guess at.
The part worth remembering
You're probably the person who notices everyone else's needs first. You remember who has the appointment, who's struggling, and who needs a call back. All that noticing takes energy, and it's allowed to come back to you.
Pick one thing from this list. Not all of it, just one. Starting with a single small change counts, and it's a better plan than the one where you fix everything on Monday.
If you're tired of running on fumes and want help figuring out why, we can start there together.
